Active School Flag Committee
The ASF Committee are delighted to show you their new ASF Yard Leader bibs which they wear everyday during the breaks. The rota that includes new volunteers will be up and running next week. You can see a picture of the committee, including our parent representative, wearing their bibs. Mrs Mc Cabe would like all the parents to know that the committee are exceptional in their dedication to keeping the ASF initiative going in the school and community, and making sure that we all stay active and healthy. They are all doing a fantastic job, well done!

Our Active Family of the week 30.1.2020

This is the presentation the Active Schools Committee gave to the inspector when she visited the school a couple of weeks ago. We are delighted to announce that we were awarded our 2nd Active Schools Flag on the 13th of December.

About the Active School Flag Project
The Active School Flag is a Department of Education and Skills non competitive initiative which recognises schools that aim to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community, by awarding them with an Active School Flag (ASF).

Our Active School Flag:
The pupils and staff of Vicarstown NS are working together to maintain the Active School Flag. The Flag is awarded to schools ‘ that strive to achieve a physically active and physically educated community’. We were awarded with our Active School Flag in 2017, and this year we are trying to renew it. To see how this first flag was achieved please take a look at the presentation below, which can also be seen on the ASF website.

AS AN ACTIVE SCHOOL WE:
- Provide all pupils with appropriate PE provision and ensure that the 5 strands/ key messages are implemented in a balanced way to promote Physical Education.
- Promote Physical Activity during break times as well as introducing new sports into the school PE timetable.
- Provide students with various physical activities during the school day, and during Active School Week, which can be seen in our pictures below.
- Through actively engaging with the ASF process we have built up strong Partnerships with Inniscarra GAA Club, Inniscarra Camogie Club, Donoughmore Ladies Football Club, Munster Rugby, Cork Sports Partnership and Cycle Right to name but a few.

5th & 6th class are having an active January 2020

Since Christmas and the increasingly inclement weather, 5th and 6th Class have been busy exercising in the classroom each day. We have been following workouts by internet sensation, Joe Wicks, aka The Body Coach, who has a series of classroom-based workouts for children. While they have been challenging to do and we have been very much out of breath by the end of it, we have really enjoyed them!

The Active Schools sport for January 2020 will be Soccer. This was suggested by Faye in 1st Class - well done Faye!

Fundamental Movement Workshop 19th of November 2019

October sees Orienteering in Vicarstown NS

Mr. Sean Cotter from Orienteering Ireland gave a super workshop to pupils from 3rd - 6th class her at Vicarstown NS on 8th of October. The children are now proficient at map reading and got to use their newly learned orienteering skills to navigate their way around different areas of the school grounds. We also now have a orienteering map of the school and grounds for future use.
