The first ever debating team from 5th & 6th class won the county final in the Concern Debating Challenge yesterday. A massive congratulations to everyone involved. The group faced a team from Glounthaune NS where they proposed the topic “The goal to end world hunger can be achieved by 2030”. The team comprising, Miriam Hegarty, Tom O’Callaghan, Hannah Lucey, Rebecca Murphy, Saoirse Hennessy, Tadhg O’Sullivan and Molly Lenehan, along with their teacher Mrs. Áine O’Shaughnessy, put in so much work, preparation and practice into this endeavour. It took a lot of debating to get this far:
1st Debate: The team opposed the topic “To combat climate change, all people should be vegetarian”.
2nd: The team proposing the topic “Children under 14 should not be allowed on social media” v Coachford NS
3rd: The team opposed the topic “People should be fined for not recycling” v Rushbrooke NS
4th: The team proposed the topic “The voting age should be lowered to the age of 16 years old” v St. Luke’s in Douglas.
